Anna’s Blog: A Life Without Heroes

Isn’t it scary when you realise that such a vast amount of your heroes came from the same generation? so much like they came into the world together, now, they’re starting leave.  At the barely lived, wrinkle free, youthfully optimistic age of 23, I can’t help but look out at 2016 and the future years with a large new dose of helplessness.

.

My generation has some incredible talent, I should know, some of that talent is in the bands I play in, some my friends, some in the top 40 charts right now.  Some of this generation are business savvy, good with instagram, making up for the lack in skill by playing this game exactly how it is – business. I hope I fall somewhere in between.

.

The problem isn’t that we don’t have the same passion or talent, but we don’t have the sound.  We don’t have innovation. The social and political climate that allowed for rock n roll to rip through what people even thought was possible, to then create true pop culture, which gave musicians a dialogue to question the world they lived in. That climate doesn’t exist any more, but we have our own climate of social unrest.  We are predicted to be yet another lost generation, stilted by low pay and high living costs, there’s a lot to get angry about and fight often creates great music.

.

The idea of my idols dying has had me in sobs and I’m sure the shock will never stop.  But what scares me more is that our generation has based almost it’s entire musical backdrop on recreating and over stretching the fantastic genres of the 50s-80s, rather than making something new.  The Anna Sin band, of course, adores the music of the past, but while we will always celebrate it, never let it be said that we don’t want to feel the same sense of pride in the music of 2016.

.

If I could take just one thing away from the music of the 1950s – 70s, it would be the scandalous and daring idea of creating something new – something that upset your mum and dad.  Because i’ve not seen any mothers chasing kids and their records down the street for a while….and when is there new music without rebellion?
