We know 2016 is somewhat in dire straits, we’ve lost plenty of heroes already. Muhammed Ali, Bowie, David Cameron… the list goes on. Sadly today however, we have to chalk up another to the ever growing list – legendary guitarist Scotty Moore sadly passed away today in Nashville following a few months of poor health.
Scotty Moore was Elvis’s original guitarist, and is widely credited not only with his trailblazing guitar lines, but also shaping The Kings sound also. It’s fair to say, music today wouldn’t be the same if not for Elvis Presley, and Elvis Presley wouldn’t have been Elvis Presley without Scotty Moore.
Ranking at 29th in Rolling Stones official 100 greatest guitarists of all time list, Scotty turned a world of guitarists on their heads penning the lines to such Elvis numbers as Heartbreak Hotel, Blue Suede Shoes, Jailhouse Rock, and Mystery Train. Keith Richards said it himself; “It was plain as day. All I wanted to do in the world was play and sound like that. Everyone wanted to be Elvis, I wanted to be Scotty.”
I think we’ll be busting some Elvis numbers out this weekend. RIP Scotty!
